Tour
  • 420 - 425 km by bike, 11 minutes by train
  • mostly flat, 2nd and 3rd cycling day with climbs, mostly on cycle paths
Tauernschleuse closed 2025

We will not start the cycle tour on the Alpe Adria Cycle Path from Salzburg until July 17th, as the railway tunnel through the Main Alpine Ridge at Böckstein/Bad Gastein is closed until then and a 4 - 5 hour bus transfer on the Tauern motorway from St. Johann im Pongau and Spittal would therefore be necessary. In addition, the most beautiful route from the main Alpine ridge to the Carinthian lakes cannot be travelled!

From the centre of the city of Mozart, a car-free ride past Hellbrunn Palace to the salt markets of Hallein, Kuchl and Golling. A short stretch of road over the Luegg Pass to Werfen (possibly by train every half hour, 14 minutes by train, approximately € 8,50 on site); then along the well-maintained cycle path to the day's destination (601 metres altitude).

Day 3, Bad Gastein (45 km/200 metres altitude)

Ride uphill on a completely car-free cycle path via Schwarzach into the Gastein Valley (partly tunnelled). Very beautiful on the valley floor via Dorfgastein to the sophisticated spa town directly in the Central Alps (1,002 metres altitude).

Flat and car-free along/near the Drau to Villach (old town). Slight ascent along the River Gail to Arnoldstein and Tarvisio.

Day 6, Carnia - Venzone/Osoppo (59/72 km, 85 metres altitude)

Along the heart of the Alpe Adria cycle path on the old railway line through the narrow valley of the Fella river to Pontebba; and Venzone or to the day's destination.

Day 7, Udine (63/50 km)

Partly car-free and through forests close to the Tagliamento River, you cycle to Gemona and through the fertile countryside of northern Italy to Udine, a splendid trading town (Piazza Liberta, Duomo, etc.).

Day 8, Grado (63 km)

On cycle paths from the city centre and through romantic villages to Palmanova, a fortified town from the heyday of Venice. Continue via Cervignano to Aquileia. You reach the Adriatic beaches on impressive cycle paths through the lagoon.
