Altmühl cycle path

Germany's oldest long-distance cycle route

The Altmühl Cycle Route is the first long-distance cycle route in Germany and has long been regarded as a superlative among the many beautiful regions of Bavaria. As early as 1904, the Munich State Surveying Office came to the conclusion that the Altmühl was a special feature in the state: The Altmühl has the lowest flow velocity of all rivers! Only since the uplift of the Alps has the Danube had a new riverbed further south, breaking through the Franconian Alb near Kelheim. What has remained is the originally wide Danube valley for the small Altmühl with its many river bends, beautiful baffle and shadow sides of the meanders and an aesthetically impressive low mountain range. Germany's first long-distance cycle route was created in 1985 to promote the regional economy; today the Altmühl Valley Cycle Route is one of the most popular cycle routes in Europe.

The long-distance cycle route is around 250 kilometres long and leads through the Altmühltal valley, past the popular lakes Brombachsee and Altmühlsee. Apart from a few short climbs to Rothenburg, the cycle route is mostly flat through the river valley.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is an ideal starting point for an Altmühl cycle tour. Culture lovers will be particularly impressed by the medieval townscape.
