Gemona
Top attractions
A stroll through the old town centre makes it clear why Gemona is one of the most traditional and beautiful villages in Friuli Venezia Giulia. Medieval streets, typical arcades with appealing frescoes give the town a great flair. The town hall at Palazzo Comunale dei Boton is also worth a visit. It dates back to the Renaissance and was modelled on a Venetian building from around 1500. On closer inspection, you can discover inscriptions and Roman reliefs in the façade.
Culture & events
One of the most important churches in the region is located in the historic centre of Gemona. The cathedral is a jewel nestled between the open sky and the rugged mountains. The church was first mentioned in 1190 and was severely damaged by the 1976 earthquake. The detailed façade with frescoes by various artists such as Giovanni Griglio and Buzeta is particularly worth seeing. The colossal statue of St Christopher, the protector of travellers, next to the entrance to the church is particularly striking.
In the permanent photo exhibition on the earthquake ‘1976 - Fragments of Memory’, snapshots from the archives show the history of the earthquake and the reconstruction.
