Reichenau
Top sights
The Schopflen Ruins were a water castle in the 13th century built to protect access to the island and now stand as ruins. The Nature Conservation Association NABU has installed an observation platform from which you can enjoy a fantastic view of the Ermatingen Basin.
The Hochwart viewpoint also offers a boundless view over the western Lake Constance. On sunny days, the panorama extends from the Swiss shore to the Höri Peninsula and the Hegauberg Mountains.
Culture & events
Together with the three Romanesque churches, the Reichenau Museum forms the "information network" for the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Reichenau Monastic Island". The impressions from the various museum stations on the discovery tour of Reichenau Island complement the visit to the historic buildings, providing an understanding of the "spirit of Reichenau".
Special event highlights include the AUGIA concerts in the Romanesque churches, featuring mainly classical pieces. The Reichenau Wine and Fish Festival, held every August, is also among the recurring highlights of the city.
Cuisine
In addition to its picturesque landscape, the island also offers a variety of culinary delights. Following the motto "from farm to table", freshly harvested vegetables and fruits land on the guests' plates. Besides tourism, vegetable farming is one of the island's main sources of income. Not to forget the work of the professional fishermen who provide almost daily freshly caught whitefish, perch, and pikeperch. Besides fish, wine also plays an important role. The Lake Constance climate is particularly ideal for viticulture. The high number of sunshine hours, reaching 1,250 hours from May to October, promotes grape ripening. Additionally, Lake Constance acts as a light and heat reflector on cooler days.
