Top Sights

The Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul was built in the 11th century and embellished with paintings by the German painter Karl Christian Andreae in the 19th century.

Also worth visiting is the central Széchenyi Square with its Baroque statue of the Trinity and the Gazi Khassim Mosque in the background (16th century), which has been converted into a Christian church.

culture & events

In 2010, the city was chosen as the European Capital of Culture by a seven-strong EU jury.

One of the biggest events in Hungarian theatre life takes place every year, the Pécs State Theatre Meeting.

Culinary

In Pécs there are countless places where you can taste the local cuisine. Typical are, for example, the goulash soup, paprikás, paprika chicken, tokány, the typical Hungarian salami, and the Esterházy cake. If you don't like the local dishes a 100%, you will also find international cuisine.
