Top sights

The castle ruins tower majestically on the town's rocky outcrop and offer a breathtaking view of the Danube and the surrounding valley. Historically significant, it is a striking landmark of the town.
Further down is Dürnstein Abbey, which was founded in 1410 as an Augustinian canonry and was magnificently remodelled 300 years later. Since May 2019, the abbey has been presenting the exhibition "Discovering the Valuable", which reflects on "the good, the beautiful and the true".

Art & culture

In addition to the ruins and the abbey, Dürnstein is full of historic buildings. The town hall in the centre of the town is a popular photo motif, especially because of its picturesque staircase and inner courtyard.
The Schoss, built in 1622 by Christoph Wilhelm on the site of ten winegrowers' houses, is also one of the most important buildings. It is flanked on the Danube side by two towers and was used by the Counts of Zinzendorf and Pottendorf from 1634 as accommodation when visiting vineyards and hunting. In 1937, the castle came into the possession of the Thiery family and has been run as a hotel since 1960.
