Ferlach
The development as a production facility for commercial and hunting weapons probably goes back to the elevation of Klagenfurt to the state capital in 1529. Under the reign of Empress Maria Theresa of Habsburg-Lothringen, the Ferlach gunsmith industry reached its historical peak and rose to world fame.
The manour house of Ferlach has been home to the Gunsmith and Hunting Museum with its collection on the art of gunsmithing and hunting knowledge, wildlife and nature conservation since 1998. In 2010 the gunsmith industry was recognized as an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO. The manour house of Ferlach was built in the 16th century and was expanded in 1780.
A journey into the past is the journey from Ferlach to Weizelsdorf on the Rosental steam train. The "Historama" in Ferlach is Austria's second largest transport museum.
The Carnica Apian Museum in Kirschentheuer has been in existence since 1994 with an exhibition on beekeeping and the biology and ecology of bees. In the connected museum shop, beekeeping products from the Rosental can be tasted and shop.
Whether leisurely cycling or action-packed mountain biking, Ferlach offers the ideal starting point for demanding trails through the Karawanken, the Drau cycle path leads in a leisurely route through the Rosental.
