Bruneck
Top attractions
The large bishop's castle, Bruneck Castle, is enthroned at the head of the green hill. Today the castle is mainly known for the Messner Mountain Museum RIPA, which is located inside the castle.
Not far from the castle is the military cemetery. Countless soldiers of various origins were laid to rest here in silence.
The imposing town gates, such as the Ursuline and Florian gates, are also striking sights in Bruneck. The gates are decorated with ornate frescoes and paintings, pictures and coats of arms.
Culture & Events
The Bruneck municipal theatre has made a name for itself in recent years. Around 200 performances are staged every year. The spectrum ranges from classical theatre to jazz concerts and readings.
Reinhold Messner's museum is located within the old castle complex. Every year, guests from a different mountain region spend the summer at the MMM Bergvölker and talk about their way of life. The aim is to address topics relating to the everyday life of the mountain people and not just to exhibit artefacts.
Culinary specialities
Flavourful experiences and varied cuisine can be found in Bruneck. Traditional dishes are served in the valley's restaurants, inns and rustic mountain huts. Tirtlan, Erdäpfelblattln and Äpfelkiachl are classics that are still prepared according to old traditions in the restaurants.
