Breisach
The EuroVelo 15 long-distance cycle path also leads through the region, connecting the origin of the Rhine in the Swiss Alps with the mouth of the North Sea near Hoek. A cycling map with signposted routes is available from Breisach-Touristik.
Alternatively, there is the route from Constance on Lake Constance in a westerly direction to Basel and further north in the direction of Freiburg im Breisgau to Herbolzheim.The route leads to Heppenheim via Strasbourg and Ettlingen. As a special program item, a rest at the Rhine Falls near the Swiss Schaffhausen should not be missing.
A special gem awaits visitors in the southwest of Breisach not far from the Kaiserstuhl mountain. High on the Münsterberg, the Sankt Stephansmünster. Romanesque and Gothic style elements characterize the appearance of the cathedral, which probably started to build in the late 12th century and was completed in the 15th century.
The Breisach Museum of Urban History presents 4000 years of eventful settlement and urban history.The permanent exhibition leads from the Stone Age to the time when Breisach on the Rhine was a prince's seat until the 17th and 18th centuries when the Austrians and French were alternate sovereigns.The show is also complemented by changing temporary exhibitions.
The Breisacher Drama Festival takes place annually in summer high above the old town on the romantic Schlossberg. the open-air stage, founded in 1924, is one of the most beautiful summer stages in Baden-Württemberg.The 748 spectator seats are covered.
What would Breisach am Rhine be without its excellent vineyards in which Burgundy, Müller- Thurgau and Silvaner thrive? The Kaiserstuhl volcanic area rises between Freiburg and the Rhine vale.This terroir offers the best climatic and geological conditions for vine growing, it is the warmest and sunniest area in all of Germany. Vine lovers should not miss a visit to one of the vineries go along with a tasting.
